Dr. Natalie Alkiviadou. Free Speech, Humour, Parody and Satire.
Dr. Alkiviadou is a legal scholar whose research focuses on free speech. Currently she works at Justitia, Denmark’s first judicial think tank. She recently published an article entitled “Humour, Parody and Satire – Funny Things!” commenting on the twitter parody account case of “‘Lady Emily Kardashian Duchess of Yiolou.”
During the podcast we discuss the right of free speech as a fundamental right and its corelation with humor, satire and parody.
We also delve into the concept of hate speech and how this interacts or affects free speech.
Dr. Alkiviadou explains the ECHR jurisprudence on the matter and gives examples from decided cases. We also compare the right of free speech between Europe and the US and the First Amendment.
Inevitably we talk about recent developments in the US like the decision of mainstream social media tycoons Facebook and Twitter to ban the accounts of President Trump following the recent events at the Capitol.
Dr. Alkiviadou’s research focuses on free speech, ‘hate speech’ and the far-right. Her monograph ‘The Far-Right in International and European Law’ was published by Routledge in May 2019 and her second monograph ‘Legal Challenges to the Far-Right: Lessons from England and Wales’ was published by Routledge in December 2019. She has several publications in a wide range of peer-reviewed journals. Natalie has worked in higher education for the last eight years, teaching subjects related to International Human Rights Law and European Law. She has worked with civil society, educators and public servants in the framework of training and capacity building on the freedom of expression and related themes.
