The Greek Resistance – fighting, philotimo and the cost of freedom, with Spyros Tsoutsoumpis

It’s Oxi Day, and Ouzo Talk again journey’s into Greece’s history with this spotlight on one of the most remarkable and complex chapters of World War II – the Greek Resistance with the help of renowned historian Spyridon Tsoutsoumpis. Although Greece fell to Axis forces in April 1941, its people refused to surrender. From remote mountain villages to occupied islands, ordinary Greeks including farmers, students, priests, women, and soldiers rose up against German, Italian, and Bulgarian occupiers. Yet behind the heroic acts lay a fractured resistance, with rival groups like ELAS and EDES, whose uneasy wartime alliance would later unravel into brutal civil conflict. Helping us unpack this story of courage, defiance, and division is leading historian Spyridon Tsoutsoumpis, whose groundbreaking work on political violence and the people’s armies of the Greek Resistance brings new light to this pivotal era in modern Greek and European history.
