Are Greece and Europe prepared should Russia cut off natural gas?
The Nord Stream gas pipeline between Russia and the EU reopened this week, with deliveries slowly getting back to levels seen before the pipeline closed for maintenance earlier this month. This has allowed Europe to catch its breath, but the fear that Russia could use gas to blackmail Europe remains, and EU countries, including Greece, are preparing emergency measures should Russia decide to completely cut off natural gas in the winter, a worst case scenario. Dr. Yannis Maniatis joins Thanos Davelis to discuss what’s at stake for Europe should Russia go down this route, look at the emergency plans on the table, and break down why Greece may be in a better position than other European counterparts should Russia decide to turn off the tap.
Dr. Yannis Maniatis is an Associate Professor at the University of Piraeus. He previously served as Greece’s Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change from 2013-2015.
