Defense bill makes sanctions on Turkey for its Russian S-400s mandatory

Congress is ready to pass this year’s National Defense Authorization Act - the annual defense policy bill - with provisions that mandate the President of the United States to sanction Turkey for its acquisition of Russian S-400s within 30 days of passage of the bill. Alan Makovsky is a senior fellow for National Security and International Policy at the Center for American Progress, and has worked on Turkey and the Middle East in several capacities, including as a senior staff member on the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the House of Representatives and at the State Department.
