NATO, the Aegean, Syria, and the intersection of Turkey's foreign and domestic politics
Over the last weeks Turkey has decided to block Sweden and Finland’s bids to join the NATO alliance, Ankara has escalated its provocations and threats against Greece in the Aegean, and Turkish President Erdogan is now threatening a new incursion into northern Syria. Dr. Lisel Hintz joins Thanos Davelis to look at these foreign policy decisions and break down how they also intersect with domestic politics inside Turkey.
Dr. Lisel Hintz is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. She studies the intersections of identity politics, repression and resistance, foreign policy, and pop culture in Turkey and its neighborhood, and is the author of the book Identity Politics Inside Out: National Identity Contestation and Foreign Policy in Turkey.
