President Biden in Brussels for key summit with EU leaders stressing West's unity

Three major summits - among the EU leaders, NATO, and the G7 - took place in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, where the primary aim was to show Western unity against Russia's war in Ukraine. President Joe Biden also traveled to Brussels, and stressed that "the single most important thing is for us to stay unified.” A central topic of discussion for EU leaders was on additional sanctions targeting Russian oil and gas, an issue that has divided European countries. Aside from President Biden’s participation, Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy also addressed the EU’s leaders via video, calling out countries that have resisted imposing additional sanctions. The summit also saw the US and EU announce a new partnership to reduce the continent’s reliance on Russian energy. Yannis Palaiologos, Kathimerini’s Brussels correspondent, joins our host Thanos Davelis with the latest analysis.

While this was ultimately a...

Greece’s economic turnaround, debt reduction, and the cost of living crisis

This week Greece saw workers in the public and the private sector go on strike, demanding better wages in the face of rising costs across the board. This comes despite Greece’s economic success story, whether it's achieving investment grade or outperforming its Eurozone partners, and as the government announced it is set to make another early repayment of €5 billion of bailout-era loans. The Polytechnic uprising, the diaspora, and the fight to restore democracy in Greece

On November 17th Greeks commemorated the 51st anniversary of the Polytechnic uprising - a seminal moment that effectively delivered the first real blow to the military dictatorship, or the junta, that was ruling Greece. While the story of the uprising itself is well known, the Greek diaspora around the world also played an important role in the fight against the junta. Alexander Kitroeff, a...
