The EUMED 9 summit, the AUKUS pact, and what this pact means for Europe
Nine EU countries on the Mediterranean held a summit in Athens on Friday to discuss issues ranging from climate change to migration, security, and Afghanistan. The summit comes two days after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen - who was also in Athens on Friday - underlined the need for a common EU strategy in dealing with climate change, migration, and defense. Hours after the European Commission President’s state of the union address, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia signed a defense pact in response to China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region that caught European countries off guard. Vassilis Nedos joins The Greek Current to talk about the EUMED 9 summit, the recent deal between the US, Australia, and the UK, and what this deal means for Europe.
Vassilis Nedos is Kathimerini’s diplomatic and defense editor.
