The Kremlin playbook: Russia's weaponization of faith and "traditionalism"

Russia is actively seeking to influence religious and traditional views to further its own agenda, pushing a narrative that Moscow stands for traditional values against a decadent West in an effort to foster division within Western societies. This is a particularly pernicious front of Russia’s malign influence campaigns, and combating it presents a uniquely difficult challenge for the United States and its European allies. Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou, one of the contributors to The Kremlin Playbook 3: Keeping the Faith, which takes a deep look at these issues, joins our host Thanos Davelis to talk about the Playbook and this element of Russian malign influence. We also look at how this is playing out in Greece, which is uniquely significant in Russia’s strategy of weaponizing “traditionalism”.

Dr. Elizabeth Prodromou is an internationally recognized leader on issues of religion and human rights, and a previous Vice Chair and Commissioner on the US Commission on International Religious Freedom. Dr. Prodromou is also a faculty member at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, where she directs the Initiative on Religion, Law, and Diplomacy.
